A Camp to Remember - ANTC 2008, Gardner, MA

On July 24-27, 2008, Northeast Region Royal Rangers held Advanced National Training Camp (ANTC) at Camp Collier in Gardner, Massachusetts. Thirty-nine Commanders, including four from NNED- Jason A. Wright, Mike Hills, Ken Beaufort, and this article’s author-were in attendance, as was Commander Bruce “Moose Call” Paquette, a previous ANTC graduate who served as a Staff member, teaching classes on building monkey bridges and rope towers! He served on a Staff of 12 that had combined 200-plus years of Ranger experience! A big part of gaining experience in the Rangers ministry comes from training. As Commander Jason, NNED’s District Training Coordinator, observed, “While I am always impressed with the quality of training and caliber of instruction that we are blessed with as Royal Ranger Leaders, I can say that ANTC was a greater and deeper experience for me than I was initially expecting from just reading through the schedule of classes.

On Thursday, the Trainees made their arrival, registered, got in uniform, and prepared for the weekend that was to come. Over the next two days, trainees attended classes on such advanced skills as Rope Towers and Bridge Building, Dutch Oven Cooking, Primitive Shelters and Outdoor Survival, Orienteering, Advanced Pageantry, and GMA Ceremonies. The last two classes had the trainees and their patrols putting on a GMA ceremony and an Outdoor Pageantry Play, complete with sets and costumes!
Shooting Sports Weekend
Created with Admarket's flickrSLiDR.
Age Range: TBD
Shooting Sports weekend is a combined outing with both Royal Rangers and the Boy Scouts of America to promote the sport of shooting while emphasizing the safety aspects of pistols, shotguns, .22 rifles and black powder rifles. This 3 day event (usually Friday afternoon/evening until Sunday) is held at the Pemigewasset Fish and Game Club in Holderness NH and starts off with setting up camp on a Friday evening to get ready for a full Saturday of shooting.
Saturday starts off with the presentation of the colors and then its off to one of the shooting sessions. One session is dedicated to helping the boys learn how to handle a shotgun and how to shoot a flying clay pigeon. This is a fun event that teaches eye-hand coordination and concentration while learning how to lead the flying target and take the best shot. Another session is the pistol range, where the boys learn the ins and outs of how to safely handle and fire a 9mm pistol, usually taught by profession instructors from the Sig Arms Academy.
Maine Yukon Day
Maine Yukon Day (MYD) is Northern New England's winter Pow Wow. Held in Brooks Maine at Camp Fair Haven, each year, boys from all over the NNED come together for games, fellowship food and fun. There are competitions, snowmobile riding, hiking/snow shoeing and like Pow Wow, the most important part is time spend before God in prayer and fellowship. Many boys and men have given their hearts to God at MYD.
Pow Wow
Pow Wow is a yearly event that takes place across the nation in each Royal Ranger District and it is a fun filled event driven weekend with events such as .22/black powder shooting, archery, foot races, bike races, pie eating contests, swimming, basketball, lacross and much more. The evening council fires are times for the boys and men to hear God's word from famous speakers from across the nation.
