Maine Divisional Pinewood Derby - The "Maine" Event

By Jay M. Woodward, NNED Publications Coordinator

On Saturday, March 19, 2011, the place to be for high-speed racing action was Calvary
Pentecostal Church in Madison, Maine, the location of the first-ever Maine Divisional
Pinewood Derby. The competition was open to both Rangers and Mpact (Missionette)
girls, three of which joined the 28 boys and men who registered their high-performance
racing machines in hopes of taking home one of the shining trophies on display!

Outpost #21 was the host Outpost, and made all the pit stops necessary for a great
event, from the Haynes Brothers (Jonathan, Sam, Joel) coordinating the registration and
keeping score, to Sue Haynes and Linda Blomerth operating the concession booth,
keeping hungry racers satisfied! The races began with an opening prayer from Pastor
Tim Haynes, and opening remarks from Commander Ken Beaufort, who served as the
Derby’s emcee. Each of the four age groups (Ranger Kids, Discovery, Adventure,
Expedition) and Commanders raced among each other, with Mpact Girls racing
alongside the boys in whatever age group they belonged to. In addition, there were also
awards given for Best Paint Job and Most Unusual Car! The participants watched the
races with eager anticipation that their car would be the first to cross the finish line!

Pinewood Derby Finds “New Life” in 2010

Satur-day-Satur-day! May-day! May-day! It was the 2010 NNED 600 Pinewood Derby! Boys, dads, and Commanders from all over the District came to the annual event, with their hand-crafted, sleekly painted, fine-tuned racing machines, to have fun and hopefully bring home some shiny trophies! This year, Pinewood Derby was held at the New Life Church in Biddeford, Maine, which has a large gymnasium and facilities that made it an excellent venue to hold the event. Pinewood Derby Coordinator Kendall Sperrey commented, “I thought the facility was the best we’ve had. The accommodations met all our needs.” The name of the church was also fitting, as this year’s Derby was also open to Mpact (Girls Ministries) girls. There were several girls who made cars and they were eager to show that they could keep up to speed with the boys and bring some “new life” to the competition! (check out the photos!)

Start Your Engines!

Indeed, there was much excitement the morning of May 1st, with boys and girls playing games in the gymnasium before the race while the final preparations were being made for the track, including the NASCAR Simulator, a popular item at Pinewood Derby that was back again this year! The races opened with the playing of the National Anthem, and the emcee of the races, District Director Jerry Love, getting the crowd “revved up” as only he can do! Commander Jerry gave an opening prayer, and reminded everyone that God is to be honored in all we do, win or lose. Then, it was time to…..START YOUR ENGINES!!!

Pinewood Derby 2009 - The NNED 600 Comes to New Hampshire

By Jay M. Woodward

Saturday, April 18! It was the annual NNED 600 Pinewood Derby, at the Laconia Christian School in Laconia, New Hampshire. Boys, leaders, moms and dads from all across Maine, New Hampshire, and Vermont came out, revved-up for this year’s competition. Countless hours were spent by the participants in preparation for the Derby, getting their sleek racing machines ready for the track. There were a total of 52 cars that competed in this year’s NNED 600! The change of location to Laconia Christian, with its static-free gymnasium, was not the only change this year. The registration process was simplified, with all race participants getting Official Driver’s Licenses, complete with pictures, in order to compete. Also, in order to ensure accuracy and eliminate any difficult calls, there was a new timer, which played a very important role in the success of this year’s Derby! One of the biggest changes, however, was the structure of the races, with two separate divisions racing, which allowed for more chances for racers to earn trophies!

Start Your Engines!

At 11:00 AM, following an opening prayer and the National Anthem, it was time for participants to start their engines! The first races were for Open Division Racing. Boys and adults who were racing for the first time this year, and had not raced at a Sectional Pinewood Derby, raced by each individual group: first the Ranger Kids, then the Discovery Rangers, followed by the Adventure and Expedition Rangers, and finally Leaders and Dads. Following the Open Division Racing, the Championship Cup Division races, for boys who had finished in one of the top three places in their Outpost race, took place. Also, there were awards for the Most Unusual Car, the Fastest Heat, and the Best Paint Job. When boys weren’t watching the action unfold on the race track, they were gathered around the NASCAR Simulator, which was back by popular demand, or were enjoying the snacks and refreshments at JB’s Snack Bar, which was coordinated by Ranger Kids Coordinator Judy Tilton. Commander Judy and her helpers made sure that no boy or adult left hungry!

And The Winners Are……..

During the Intermission, Deputy District Director Kendall Sperrey, who served as Derby Coordinator, gave a devotion, using boys and men big and small, to show them that God can use them no matter how big or small they are, that we all have our own unique gifts. Two boys came forward to commit their lives to Christ! When the last race was over, and the scores were tallied, it was time to hand out the trophy hardware! The First Place Winner in the Championship Cup Race was Josh Morin of Outpost #16 in Lewiston, Maine, followed by his brother Timmy Morin in Second Place and Havon Montoya of Outpost #40 in Plymouth, NH in Third Place! Also, boys who competed got to take home prizes which were provided courtesy of some generous donations!

This year’s Pinewood Derby was a great time of fun, competition, fellowship, and good sportsmanship by all who were present. Pinewood Derby is an event that keeps getting better every year. But, as Commander Kendall pointed out, “the highlight of the day, shining far above all the trophies that were handed out, was the two boys that committed their lives to Christ. How can it get any better than that?” As for next year’s Derby, “I am excited about the prospects for next year’s event. We have a standing invitation from a church in Biddeford, ME who would have liked to host our event this year but was unable too due to calendar conflicts. This should make a great venue for us next year as well as easier access for many of our outposts. I feel like we have gained a handle on some issues that we have wrestled with in the past and look forward to growth in numbers and quality as we move forward.” Hats off to all those involved, who came together and worked together to help bring the NNED 600 to New Hampshire!

Revved Up for Pinewood Derby 2008

By Jay M. Woodward, Pony Express Editor

On Saturday, April 12, NNED Royal Rangers held the 3rd annual NNE 600 Pinewood Derby at the Curtis Lake Christian Church in Sanford, Maine. A total of 41 boys and 15 leaders registered cars for the Derby. The contestants spent weeks cutting, sanding, painting, fine-tuning, and putting the finishing touches on their sleek racing machines, and now they were ready to compete. Deputy District Commander Kendall Sperrey, who served as Pinewood Derby Coordinator, along with his pit crew, had spent hours preparing the church gymnasium and track for the day’s event! Indeed, everyone who came was really “revved-up” for this year’s Derby, which included many proud parents cheering in the stands!

After the morning registration, participants got their cars weighed to determine if they qualified, went to the tune-up station if necessary, and waited on the edge of their seats for their car to go zooming down the track. After the opening prayer from the track chaplain, Pastor Tim Haynes, and then the reciting of the Pledge of Allegiance, it was time to hear the familiar, “Start Your Engines!” The race announcer was none other than District Commander Jerry Love. Each age group raced together: first Ranger Kids, then Discovery Rangers, Adventure Rangers, Expedition Rangers, and finally Leaders. Following these races, there was the Grand Championship, which was the big prize that everyone was most excited about!
